How to Help a Colicky, Fussy, or Gassy Baby?!

How to help a colicky, fussy, gassy baby

If you’d have asked me when I was writing A Nurse in Your Purse if I’d ever consider being featured on a podcast to talk about it, I would have said never. That’s waaaay too far out of my comfort zone to even be fathomed. Besides, it’s just a little guidebook …

Never say never, right?

Meet Helen

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege to chat with Helen Thompson, owner and founder of My Baby Massage and the First Time Mum’s Chat Podcast, to talk about my book. In that episode we discussed just a portion of the book – diaper rashes and other baby skin issues. You can listen to that episode here.

Helen started the podcast as a means to help first time mom’s find the resources they need to help with the common issues they’ll face as a new mom. She’s also a baby massage instructor.

Baby massage? Is that even a thing?

Why, yes, my friend it is. If you have a colicky, fussy, or gassy baby, or even a baby that doesn’t sleep well, then listen up. If you’ve looked into your diet, if breastfeeding, to find relief for your baby, or have tried multiple formulas, with no improvement, then this may be your next step!

As a mom of a kiddo that was colicky and very gassy, I wish I had known that baby massage was a real thing. That there was more to it than just bicycling the legs and random belly massaging. Which, to be honest, I wasn’t even sure if I was doing the belly massaging right at the time!

Even working in a pediatric clinic, I never had a run in with anyone that taught baby massage techniques. I doubt the providers knew much more than I did about bicycling the legs and belly massages. The most given answer from the docs for colic was that it’ll run its course and they’ll grow out of it.

What mom in the history of having babies wants to hear that when their kid has been screaming non stop for three hours? Every night!

Which is why I’m telling you about Helen and people like her that offer help with these fussy, colicky, gassy babies. Because, mama, it takes a village to raise a child and having someone during this frustrating stage give you some guidance is invaluable.

How To Help A Colicky, Fussy, Or Gassy Baby

Helen has a few resources that can be of great use to you as a mom of a fussy baby. To start, you can download her free guide on baby massage routines, or you can take her online course where she teaches you how to do all the different massages with your baby.

Final Thoughts

Helen was generous enough to let me review her course. She’s constantly striving to make it better for her audience and asked for my opinion on it as a nurse and as a mom that had a colicky baby.

So what’s my opinion?

I think this online course is quick, easy to understand, and perfect for busy mamas. Helen presents the material in a no fluff, no nonsense, let’s get down to business kind of way. She has handouts you can print off and use for quick reference wherever you are. The techniques she shows you are easy to pick up on and are clearly demonstrated in her how-to videos.

I seriously wish I would have known about this when my colicky son was little. To provide him some relief. And reduce my stress level and mom guilt. My mental state would have been drastically different back then. I definitely think this is something that’ll benefit you as a mama with a colicky, fussy, gassy, or irritable baby. It’s another great tool to add to your mama toolbelt.
